How the result is really decided

The buttons, reels and animations make a slot feel active, but the result is determined by the game system rather than by the picture on screen. Learn these terms and paylines, symbols, RNG, RTP and volatility, the information panel becomes much easier to read. The guide explains the moving parts in plain English so you can compare games without relying on guesswork or casino jargon.

In one paragraph: a random number generator produces a value when you commit the bet. The game's certified maths model maps that value to an outcome. The animation then plays. Nothing you do during the animation — stopping it early, holding the button, changing screens — can alter a result that already exists, and nothing about previous rounds influences the next one.

What a random number generator does

A casino RNG is a piece of software producing a stream of values that pass statistical tests for randomness. It runs continuously, whether or not anyone is playing, and it has no concept of a player, a balance or a losing streak. When a bet is committed, the game takes the current value and maps it through the maths model into an outcome: a symbol layout, a landing slot, a fish, an end point for a rising multiplier.

The consequence worth internalising is that there is no state connecting one round to the next. The generator does not know that your last twelve rounds returned nothing, because it does not know what a round is. It produces numbers. This is why the concept of a game being "due" has no mechanism behind it — there is nothing in the system that could implement such a thing even if a designer wanted it.

Where the return percentage lives

The maths model is where the game's economics are set: which outcomes exist, how often each is produced, and what each pays. Add those up across the whole outcome space and you get the return percentage. That is why the figure is a design property rather than a measurement — it falls out of the model's construction, and it can be calculated exactly by whoever built it.

It also explains the configurability that trips players up. Studios commonly certify several versions of one game with different return figures, and operators license whichever suits their market. The software is not being tampered with in a lobby; a different build was installed. Certification, and what it covers

Games supplied to licensed operators are tested by independent laboratories as a condition of those licences. The testing verifies that the RNG produces statistically sound output and that the game's actual behaviour matches its declared maths model — in other words, that the game does what its paperwork says.

That is a meaningful protection and it is also a narrow one. Certification says nothing about whether an operator pays withdrawals promptly, how it words bonus terms, or whether it will freeze an account on a technicality. Those are conduct questions belonging to the operator's licence and its regulator, not to the game's test report. A perfectly certified game inside a badly run casino is still a bad experience, which is what the lobby checklist is for.

Provably fair: a genuine advance, oversold

Provably fair systems, which BGaming publishes for parts of its instant catalogue, add something certification cannot. The operator commits to a seed before you play by publishing its hash. Your own client contributes a seed too. After the round, the original seed is revealed and you can verify that the result was derived from the pre-committed combination. If the operator had swapped the seed to engineer your loss, the hash would not match.

What it proves: the result was not chosen after your bet was known. That is exactly the fraud players in unlicensed crypto casinos most feared, and eliminating it was a real achievement.

What it does not prove: that the odds are good. A provably fair game with a 5% house edge is provably fair and expensive. The verification says the deal was dealt honestly, not that the deal favours you. It also stops at the game boundary — no fairness hash covers withdrawal handling, bonus wagering calculations or account restrictions.

Every row in that table costs players real money, and the last one costs the most, because it is the belief that turns a planned session into a chase. If you have ever raised a stake specifically because you were behind, you have acted on it — most people have, and recognising the pattern is the useful part.

Why the theatre exists anyway

If the result is instant, why the elaborate animation? Because the sequence is the product. A number appearing on screen would be information; a hook descending through ice while you wait to see what comes up is an experience, and the anticipation is what people are actually buying. The same logic explains the tumble chains in grid slots and the rising multiplier in crash games — both stretch a resolved outcome across enough seconds to feel like something is happening.

There is nothing sinister in that, provided you know which part is the game and which part is the show. The design becomes a problem only when the theatre convinces you that you are influencing the outcome, because that belief is what justifies playing longer than intended. The one format on this site where a real decision exists is crash, and even there the decision is when to leave, not what the round will do.

What actually varies between games

If the generator is the same everywhere and the animation is decoration, what is left to distinguish one game from another? The maths model, entirely. How many outcomes exist, how the probability is distributed across them, what each one pays, and how the paying outcomes are grouped into features. It is also why the only questions worth asking about a new game are structural ones: what does a round cost, how often does it return something, and how much runway does the distribution demand. Everything else — theme, soundtrack, character, the studio's reputation for polish — affects whether you enjoy the time, not what the time costs.
